Williams Acquitted in Tulane Bribery Trial

The Chicago Defender, Tuesday June 17, 1986
"Former Tulane University basketball star John 'Hot Rod' Williams was acquitted Monday of all charges in his sports bribery retrial... Defense attorney Michael Green hugged Williams when the verdict was read. [Green] asked sports fans to remember that the six jurors heard all the evidence and decided Williams was innocent. 'Just give him his day in the sun,' Green said. 'That's what he was put on this earth to do.'"

A New Start For Williams

Daily News, Sunday June 29, 1986
"Twenty minutes is all the jury needed to acquit John (Hot Rod) Williams of point shaving charges at Tulane. A half hour is all the NBA took to clear him to play with the Cleveland Cavaliers... [His lawyer Mike Green] remembers fondly their first meeting in New Orleans. 'I'm 6-feet, so he towered over me,' Green said. 'Still, he spoke slowly as he explained things, and at the end, he had tears in his eyes. He said, 'Mister, please help me, I didn't do anything wrong.' I said you got a lawyer.'"
